Your needlepoint deserves a finish as thoughtful as the hundreds of hours you put into stitching it. That's why we're excited to announce a new option at The Final Curtain Finishing: the box or gusseted pillow.
Alongside our knife-edge and ruffled styles, box pillow finishing gives your completed canvas a structured, tailored look with real dimension.
What Is a Box or Gusseted Pillow?
A box pillow, sometimes called a gusseted pillow, features a strip of fabric sewn between the top and bottom panels to create a three-dimensional, square edge. Instead of the two pieces meeting in a thin seam, they're joined by a side panel that gives the pillow depth and a crisp, upholstered silhouette.

That side panel is called the gusset, and its height, the gusset width, is what sets the box pillow apart. It runs around all four sides, holding the shape and keeping the filling evenly distributed rather than shifting toward the middle or slumping at the edges. The result is a pillow that stands up beautifully on a sofa, bench, or bed, and shows off your stitching from every angle.
We offer you choice of 1.5, 2, 2.5, or 3 inch gusset widths.
Why Choose a Box Pillow for Your Needlepoint?
Box pillows are a natural fit for pieces that benefit from presence and structure:
- A gallery-worthy display. The raised edge frames your design like a finished work of art, giving flat needlepoint a substantial, custom-upholstered feel.
- Even, lasting shape. Because the gusset keeps the filling in place, your pillow holds its form over years of use and highlights the professional craftmanship of our finishers.
- Coordinating fabric. The side panel is an opportunity to introduce a complementary fabric, welting, or trim that pulls your whole room together. You can choose the fabric or we can help you pick the perfect compliment to you needlepoint canvas.
Box pillows are especially striking for larger canvases, geometric or architectural designs, and pieces meant to be a focal point rather than a soft accent.
Choosing Your Gusset Width
The gusset width determines how deep and dimensional your finished pillow will be, and it's entirely up to you:
- 1 to 1.5 inches creates a subtle, refined edge, perfect when you want just a hint of depth.
- 2.5 inches is our most popular, balanced choice, giving clear structure without overwhelming the design.
- 3 inches makes a bold, generous statement, ideal for large pieces or when you want a plush, substantial pillow.
Not sure which to pick? That's what we're here for. We're happy to talk through your canvas size, design, and where the pillow will live, and recommend a width that shows your work off best.
